They were challenged to give the people the most useful gift. Poseidon’s was a salt spring and Athena’s was an olive tree. It is said that the very tree continued to grow in the Acropolis for centuries until the Persians burnt it to the ground but then the same day it grew again. The olive is sacred to Athena and to the city of Athens and an olive tree appeared on Athenian coins. Because the olive tree boasts incredible endurance and can regrow even after being severely cut, its wood spiritually represents inner strength, survival through hardship, and renewal. Spiritually, olive wood symbolizes peace, resilience, divine presence, and healing. Because olive trees can survive in harsh climates and live for thousands of years, their wood is highly revered across major traditions as a representation of enduring faith, spiritual cleansing, and deep, ancestral hope. The olive branch is an ancient, universal symbol of peace. Holding or wearing olive wood—such as prayer beads or a cross—is believed to carry a calming, harmonious energy that eases anxiety and promotes reconciliation. People often use handcrafted items like olive wood crosses or olive wood beads to ground their meditation and feel closer to the natural and spiritual realms. The wood represents divine peace and acts to protect the sacred space. While olive wood is known as a high-vibrational, peaceful wood, it can be paired with other defensive shielding woods like Rowan or Wenge if using for aggressive warding or banishing. Olive wood is deeply woven into Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions. Many artifacts are sourced from the Holy Land, where the trees date back centuries. For Christians, it holds profound significance because Jesus spent his final hours praying under an olive tree in Gethsemane. It was also historically used to craft the sacred doors and cherubim in the Temple of Solomon. Olive wood is traditionally burned as incense to bless spaces, promote inner peace, and provide emotional healing. In Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions, the smoke is also burned to ward off negative energy. It is used across various traditions (such as in Greek and Cypriot communities) to sanctify homes and protect against the “evil eye”. Believed to induce relaxation, it provides mental clarity, and helps foster spiritual connections. Olive Wood Health & Well-Being Associations Olive wood contains natural phenolic compounds, specifically oleuropein and related polyphenols, which inhibit the growth of bacteria. This makes utensils and cutting boards highly hygienic for food preparation. The wood also has a very dense closed grain structure which prevents it from absorbing liquids, food particles, or odors, minimizing the risk of contamination from spoiled food. Olive Wood Description Olive wood is highly prized for its striking, swirling grain patterns and exceptional durability. Harvested sustainably from pruned or non-producing trees, this dense hardwood is naturally resistant to bacteria, stains, and odors, making it a premier, long-lasting material for luxury kitchenware, statement furniture, and decorative carvings. The slow-growing nature of the olive tree produces a tight, highly complex grain with rich, swirling colors. Ranging from warm pale yellow to deep brown with dark, dramatic veins, no two pieces are exactly alike. It is extremely hard and heavy, making it highly resistant to cracking, warping, and stains. Olive wood is often used to create hand-carved religious items, intricate furniture, and small decorative sculptures. Because it is a natural wood, olivewood requires gentle care to prevent drying out and splitting. Hand-wash only with warm, soapy water; never soak it or put it in the dishwasher. Periodically restore the wood’s natural shine and prevent it from drying out by rubbing it lightly with food-grade mineral oil or olive oil. Olive Tree Botany / Cultivation / Harvesting Olive trees are native to the coastal areas of the eastern Mediterranean Basin as well as the Levant, northern Saudi Arabia, northern Iraq, and northern Iran at the south of the Caspian Sea. In the United States, over 95% of domestic olives are grown in California, but commercial and backyard production has expanded to warmer regions like Texas, Georgia, Arizona, Florida, and Oregon. Olives thrive in environments with hot, dry summers and mild winters, doing best in USDA Hardiness Zones 8–10. If you live in an area with freezing winters, you can still grow olive trees! Many gardeners in colder zones (like the Midwest or Northeast) grow compact or dwarf varieties in containers, keeping the trees outdoors during the summer and moving them indoors to protect them from winter frosts. For cooler climates or patio growing, popular resilient varieties include Arbequina, Frantoio, and Koroneiki. Because olive trees are primarily grown for their valuable fruit and oil, the wood is rarely sourced by cutting down healthy trees. Instead, it is ethically harvested from old, non-productive trees or annual trimmings. It is a short and squat plant that rarely exceeds 8–15 m (26–49 ft) in height. There is an exception to this in the Pisciottana, a unique variety comprising 40,000 trees found only in the area around Pisciotta in the Campania region of southern Italy. These trees often exceed 8–15 m (26–49 ft) with correspondingly large trunk diameters. The silvery green leaves are oblong, measuring 4–10 cm (1.6–3.9 in) long and 1–3 cm (0.39–1.2 in) wide. The trunk is typically gnarled and twisted. The small white, feathery flowers, with ten-cleft calyx and corolla, two stamens and bifid stigma, are borne generally on the previous year’s wood, in racemes springing from the axils of the leaves. The fruit is a small drupe 1–2.5 cm (0.39–0.98 in) long, thinner-fleshed and smaller in wild plants than in orchard cultivars. Olive trees like to grow in climates with hot, dry summers and mild winters on slopes in full sun, the south side is ideal. Olive trees require full sun (at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily). Olive trees like a sandy loam that neither extremely acid nor basic. They need well-draining soil—they do not like “wet feet” and are prone to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clays. They need some chill hours (temperatures below 45°F, but generally above 20°F) in the winter to produce fruit the following season. Seed should be given a period of cold stratification first, it is best to sow the seed as soon as it is ripe in a greenhouse in the autumn. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter, perhaps for their first 2 – 3 winters. Plant them out into their permanent locations outdoors in early summer and give them some protection from winter cold for at least their first winter.
