In ancient and medieval lore, Peridot is profoundly connected to the Sun. Ancient Egyptians called it the “Gem of the Sun” and used it in protective amulets. It is also known as the “Gem Born in Fire” due to its volcanic genesis. Its Sun connection brings vitality, self-confidence, and a goal-driven sense of purpose. It symbolizes strength, vitality, good fortune, and emotional renewal. It is said that Peridot carries the gift of “inner radiance”, sharpening the mind and opening it to new levels of awareness and growth, helping one to recognize and realize one’s destiny and spiritual purpose.  Peridot provides the emotional wisdom needed to prevent burnout and aggression. It promotes empathy, self-love, and the balancing of mood swings and anxiety. Peridot is believed to bring courage, reduce negative emotions, and promote vitality and heart-centered growth. In the Book of Exodus (28:17), Peridot (referred to as pitdah in Hebrew) is believed to be the second stone in the first row of the High Priest’s breastplate. In the Book of Revelation (21:20), Peridot is listed as the ninth foundation stone of the New Jerusalem, symbolizing the glory and eternal majesty of God’s kingdom. PERIDOT DESCRIPTION Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color: an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green, however, depends on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green. In rare cases, peridot may have a medium-dark toned, pure green with no secondary yellow hue or brown mask. Lighter-colored gems are due to lower iron concentrations. Unlike most gemstones, Peridot forms deep within the Earth’s upper mantle rather than the crust, and is brought to the surface by tectonic and volcanic activity. Around 80% to 95% of the world’s peridot is mined in the United States, specifically on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation near Globe, Arizona. Other key global and domestic sources include Buell Park, Arizona ; Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico ; Mogok Valley, Myanmar (Burma) ; the Gilgit and Kashmir mountainous areas of Pakistan ; China, Vietnam, Australia, Brazil, Kenya, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. Historically, the most famous peridot source was Egypt’s Zabargad Island (St. John’s Island) in the Red Sea. Mined since 300 BCE, this location supplied ancient civilizations but is mostly depleted today. Peridot can be found in mafic and ultramafic rocks occurring in lava and peridotite xenoliths of the mantle. The gem occurs in silica-deficient rocks such as volcanic basalt and pallasitic meteorites. Along with diamonds, peridot is one of only two gems observed to be formed not in Earth’s crust, but in the molten rock of the upper mantle. Gem-quality peridot is rare on Earth’s surface due to its susceptibility to alteration during its movement from deep within the mantle and weathering at the surface. PERIDOT CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Peridot when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a Green or Pink candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly.
