The stone’s namesake pays homage to the White Buffalo Calf Woman, a spiritual figure who gifted humanity with ceremonial traditions and taught them to live in harmony with the Earth. The White Buffalo is a powerful omen of peace, abundance, and the fulfillment of prophecy in Lakota and other Plains Native American traditions. According to Lakota legend, a beautiful woman appeared to two Lakota men who were hunting wild game during lean times. She gifted them with sacred tobacco, teaching them to use it in prayer. As she retreated, she transformed into a rare white buffalo. Thereafter, and upon using the sacred tobacco, a large herd of buffalo appeared, ending the men’s hunger.Because of its snowy, creamy color, White Buffalo Turquoise is a symbol of absolute purity. It is often used in spiritual practices to foster innocence, release past attachments, and offer a clean slate for forgiveness and new beginnings. In modern crystal healing, the stone is highly prized for its ability to activate and open the Crown Chakra. It helps quiet a restless mind, making it a popular aid for deep meditation. Practitioners use it to cut energetic cords, dispel anxiety, and connect more deeply with the divine or a higher state of consciousness. While white stones are associated with higher, celestial realms, the bold black or brown matrix in White Buffalo Turquoise brings an element of grounding. It acts as a protective amulet to absorb negative energies, keeping the wearer spiritually grounded while remaining open to cosmic wisdom. Many believe that wearing this stone today will protect your lungs from the harmful smog in the unclean air. This stone also aids with communication. It allows you to speak freely and clearly without blockages. Description: White Turquoise is a misnomer in the gemstone world. True turquoise only forms in blue and green hues. What is sold under this name is almost always White Buffalo (technically dolomite or calcite) or White Howlite. Because White Buffalo is extracted from the same region in Nevada as traditional blue and green turquoise, the miners originally thought it was a white variant of turquoise. The only location White Buffalo is found worldwide is in Tonopah, Nevada; discovered in the Dry Creek Min in 1993 by the Otteson family. This family was scouting turquoise for over 50 years when the discovery was made. White Buffalo is the most highly valued and authentic-looking white stone used in Southwestern and Native American jewelry. It features a brilliant white base with dramatic dark webbed veining. White Buffalo is hard and will not scratch easily. Real White Buffalo cabochons are extremely rare. Rather than developing in copper mines (which gives turquoise its notable coloring), White Buffalo grows alongside magnesium, which bleaches pigment from the stone. Despite not being true turquoise, it shares a similar hardness and polish, making it a highly prized, authentic, and collectible gemstone in Native American and Southwestern jewelry. White Howlite is a common borate mineral found in evaporite deposits that features a bright white surface with gray or black webbed “matrix” lines. Crystals of Howlite are rare, having been found only in a couple localities worldwide. Crystals were first reported from Tick Canyon in the Sierra Pelona Mountains of California, then later at Iona, Nova Scotia. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your White Turquoise / Howlite when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a White, Black or Brown candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly. Recharge as needed by placing in the sunlight or moonlight for a few hours, or by burying in the earth for a day or two. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Do not use heat or steam to clean. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or sunlight. Avoid contact with hard surfaces, and take care not to subject to hard bumps or sharp blows.
