Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Taurus between April 20th and May 20th. Taurus is one of the three earth signs and in traditional astrology the ruling planet is Venus. The exaltation (place of awareness) for Taurus is the Moon, the fall (position of weakness) is in Uranus, and detriment in Mars and Pluto. The bestial sign of Taurus is associated with several myths and bull worship from several ancient cultures. It was the first sign of the zodiac established among the Mesopotamians, who called it “The Great Bull of Heaven”, it was the constellation through which the Sun rose on the Vernal (Spring) Equinox at that time, that is the Early Bronze Age, from about 4000 BC to 1700 BC. In the Old Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, the goddess Ishtar sends Taurus, the “Bull of Heaven”, to kill Gilgamesh for spurning her advances. Enkidu tears off the bull’s hind part and hurls the quarters into the sky where they become the stars we know as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Some locate Gilgamesh as the neighboring constellation of Orion, facing Taurus as if in combat. In early Mesopotamian art, the Bull of Heaven was closely associated with Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of sexual love, fertility, and warfare. In Greek mythology, Taurus was identified with Zeus, who assumed the form of a magnificent white bull to abduct Europa, a legendary Phoenician princess. In illustration of Greek mythology, only the front portion of this constellation is depicted, sometimes explained as Taurus being partly submerged as he carried Europa out to sea. A second Greek myth portrays Taurus as Io, a mistress of Zeus. To hide his lover from his wife Hera, Zeus changed Io into the form of a heifer. Most closely associated with Hestia (Greek Goddess of protection of the home), Taureans are believed to share her personality traits such as peace, stability, comfort, grounding, practicality, growth and steadfastness. Taurus also has a close connection with the Dryad (a nature spirit that lives in trees and takes the form of a young woman) such as a strong sense of loyalty, objectivity, rationality, patience, and humble protection of others, the home, and the world around them. Taurus is sensual and loving, giving off contemplative energy. They are indulgent, enjoying beauty, comfort, good food, and lavish pleasures. They enjoy relaxing in serene environments. Taurus is elegant, and has a sexy charm and irresistible piercing gaze that is like looking deep into a beautiful soul. Taurus is intuitive and cunning, with the ability to also see deep into the souls of others by looking into their eyes. Regardless of any cloak you wear, Taurus will know your true nature. Taurus is very thick-skinned and can persevere through any challenge or weather any storm. It is the sign most likely to have the gift of atmokinesis, or weather manipulation. Taurus however can have a very fixed uncompromising stubbornness. Their biggest fear is being defenseless. They are afraid of having nowhere to run to and having no means of protecting themselves. In relationships, Taurus is attracted to the other Earth signs Capricorn and Virgo.
