The lion was raised by Hera and sent to terrorize the hills of Nemea. The first of Heracles’ (Hercules) twelve labours was to slay the lion. Because its golden fur was impervious to attack, it could not be killed with mortals’ weapons. Its claws were sharper than mortals’ swords and could cut through any strong armor. While searching for the lion, Heracles fetched some arrows to use against it, not knowing its golden fur was impenetrable. When he found the lion and shot at it with his bow, he discovered the fur’s protective property when the arrow bounced harmlessly off the creature’s thigh. After some time, the lion returned to his cave. The cave had two entrances, one of which Heracles blocked; then he entered the other. In those dark close quarters, Heracles stunned the beast with his club, eventually killing it by strangling it with his bare hands. After slaying the lion, he tried to skin it with a knife from his belt but failed. He then tried sharpening the knife with a stone and even tried with the stone itself. Finally, Athena, noticing the hero’s plight, told Heracles to use one of the lion’s own claws to skin the pelt. Heracles wore the Nemean Lion’s coat, as it was impervious to the elements and all but the most powerful weapons. Egyptians worshipped the constellation of Leo, which they referred to as “Knem”, because it was present during the flooding of the Nile River. The event signified plentiful harvests for the upcoming year. Ruler of Egypt, Tutankhamun’s gold throne features lion heads where the seat and front legs meet, as well as clawed feet at the end of each leg, symbolizing power and royalty. Known for their ferocious attitude, Leo is motivated by success, energy and power. Leo is self-assured, passionate, loyal, and dramatic. They are natural leaders who enjoy being in the spotlight and celebrating themselves. Leo is confident and outgoing.
