Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Virgo between August 23rd and September 22nd. Virgo is one of the three Earth signs and in traditional astrology the ruling planet is Mercury. The exaltation (place of awareness) for Virgo is in Mercury, the fall (position of weakness) is in Venus, and detriment in Jupiter and Neptune. In Greek mythology, Virgo is associated with Astraea, the last immortal to abandon Earth when the gods fled to Olympus (which is why Virgo is associated with the Earth element). Astraea is the virgin Goddess of justice, innocence, purity and precision. She is closely associated with the Greek Goddess of justice, Dike. By the Iron Age, the world was in a chaotic state. People only coveted gold, while family and friends did not trust each other. Astraea then abandoned the Earth to flee from the new wickedness of humanity, ascending to heaven to become the constellation Virgo. According to myth, Astraea will one day come back to Earth, bringing with her the return of the utopian Golden Age of which she was the ambassador. In Egyptian mythology, the Sun’s presence in Virgo marked the beginning of the wheat harvest, thus linking Virgo to wheat grain. In Christianity, the birth of Jesus to a virgin in Bethlehem is symbolically connected to Virgo. Virgo symbolizes the maiden, are gentle and maternal, guided through life by their sensitivity, empathy, and ability to nurture. Virgo is detail-oriented, grounded, logical, hardworking, selfless, and a perfectionist. They are natural healers and are good with animals. Virgo is most comfortable in a routine and likes setting goals and making lists. They are methodical and quick thinkers, studious, and have an appetite for learning and languages, wanting to know how to do things correctly. Feeling like they’re making an impact, or at least trying to, is what makes them happy. They need a sense of purpose and achievement. Despite their reputation for being meticulous and precise, Virgo are adaptable, easily adjust to change, and are logical and resilient. Virgo is also concerned about health and is careful about their diet.  On the surface, they appear to be humble, self-effacing, industrious and practical. But underneath, they are natural, kind, and sympathetic. Preferring to have control, Virgo is doesn’t rush relationships and is slow to fall in love. They prefer that people “stay in their lane” and can sometimes be bristly when others try to tell them what to do or mess with their sense of order. Virgo can sometimes experience flare-ups of frustration or anger when their plans are disrupted, or their efforts are undervalued. A tendency to overthink and overanalyze can lead them to being overly dependent and clingy. Their quick temper can lead to conflicts and strain in relationships. They can be easily overwhelmed by the state of the world. In relationships, Virgo is attracted to the other Earth signs Capricorn and Taurus, who appreciate their reliability and trustworthiness. Virgo is intrigued by honesty, orderliness, and cleanliness. Virgo is also compatible with Pisces, as their sensitive emotional nature balances out Virgo’s analytical nature.
