Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Scorpio between October 24th and November 21st. Scorpio is one of the three Water signs and in traditional astrology the ruling planet is Mars. The exaltation (place of awareness) for Scorpio is in Uranus, the fall (position of weakness) is in the Moon, and detriment in Venus. In Greek mythology, several myths associated with Scorpius attribute it to Orion. According to one version, Orion boasted to the Goddess Artemis and her mother Leto that he would kill every animal on Earth. Artemis and Leto sent a scorpion to kill Orion. Their battle caught the attention of Zeus, who raised both combatants to the sky to serve as a reminder for mortals to curb their expressive pride. In another version of the myth, Artemis’ twin brother, Apollo, was the one who sent the scorpion to kill Orion after the hunter earned the Goddess’ favor by admitting she was better than him. After Zeus raised Orion and the scorpion to the sky, Orion hunts every winter but flees every summer when the scorpion comes. In a Greek myth without Orion, the celestial scorpion encountered Phaethon while he was driving his father Helios’ Sun Chariot. Out of desire to have his parentage confirmed, Phaethon travels to Helios’ (the Sun God) palace in the east. Phaethon is recognized by his father and asks for the privilege of driving his chariot for a single day. Despite Helios’ fervent warnings and attempts to talk him out of it, counting the numerous dangers he would face on his celestial journey, and reminding Phaethon that only he could control the horses…the boy is not dissuaded and does not change his mind. He is then allowed to take the chariot’s reins. His ride is disastrous, as he cannot keep a firm grip on the horses. One of his many dangerous encounters was with the scorpion. Phaethon eventually rode the horses too far away from the Earth causing the planet to freeze, then rode too closely causing it to burn. Zeus is angered by the boy’s recklessness and to prevent disaster strikes him down with a thunderbolt. Phaethon then falls to Earth and dies, his dead body falling into the river Eridanus. Scorpio is associated with secrecy, boldness and passion, and is sometimes said to be represented by Hades, God of the Underworld. Scorpios are said to be intuitive and clairvoyant (drawing strength from the psychic emotional realm), strong, independent, enigmatic, and can be charismatic and intense. They can be protective and may not let their guard down around strangers, making it difficult to get close to them. Scorpio is drawn to extremes, challenges, danger, and darkness. They are unpredictable, setting high goals, not seeing or setting limits on their lives, and not letting anyone tell them something isn’t possible. Scorpio has a venomous sting, laying in wait to strike when least expected. Scorpio enjoys the company of people that are honest and not afraid to say what they mean. However, they can also be manipulative and twist facts to suit their purpose. Scorpio can struggle with jealousy and possessiveness. They have trust issues and their biggest fear is betrayal, causing them to be very cautious about who they associate with. Scorpio is attracted to people that push their boundaries and bring out their most intense desires and fears, as well as people that are confident, mysterious, challenging, and sexually passionate. It takes Scorpio a long time to fall in love, as they need to build trust first. In relationships, Scorpio is attracted to the other Water signs Cancer and Pisces. Scorpio is also compatible with the Earth signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn as they provide grounding and structure. Scorpio should avoid relationships with Gemini, who tend to not be expressive about their feelings, are social butterflies, frequently change their mind, and lack the consistency that Scorpio needs.
