Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Sagittarius between November 22nd and December 21st. Sagittarius is one of the three Fire signs and in traditional astrology the ruling planet is Jupiter. The exaltation (place of awareness) for Sagittarius is in the South Node and Chiron, the fall (position of weakness) is in the North Node and Ceres, and detriment in Mercury. Greek mythology associates Sagittarius with the centaur archer Chiron, who mentored Achilles, a Greek hero of the trojan War, in archery. Represented by the symbol of a bow and arrow, Sagittarius is half human half horse, and the learned healer whose higher intelligence forms a bridge between Earth and Heaven. As an archer, Sagittarius is said never to fail in hitting the mark and this depiction alludes to the power of prophecy, hence the claim that seers and prophets are born under this sign. Legend has it that among his brethren centaurs, Chiron was the wisest and most just. Centaurs are notorious for being wild, lusty, overly indulgent drinkers and carousers, violent when intoxicated, and generally uncultured delinquents. Chiron, by contrast, was intelligent, civilized, and kind. His biological father was the Titan Cronus, who had taken the form of a horse and impregnated Chiron’s mother, the Oceanid Nymph Philyra. Soon after giving birth, Philyra abandoned the child. He was found by Apollo who took him under his wing. Apollo taught the young centaur the art of medicine, herbs, music, archery, hunting, gymnastics, and prophecy, and made him rise above his beastly nature. Apollo’s twin sister Artemis also trained him in archery and hunting. Chiron was known for his knowledge and skill with medicine, and thus was credited with the discovery of botany and pharmacy, the science of herbs and medicine. Chiron’s uniquely peaceful character, kindness, and intelligence are attributed to Apollo and Artemis. A great healer, astrologer, and respected oracle, Chiron was said to be the first among centaurs and highly revered as a teacher and tutor. He was killed with an arrow poisoned with the blood of Hydra by Heracles (Hercules), who made a deal with Zeus (Chiron’s half-brother) to take away Chiron’s immortality so he could sacrifice him in exchange for the freedom of Prometheus. Chiron, having lost his immortality, could not save himself and willingly gave his life. Zeus then took pity on him and placed him among the stars in the sky. Sagittarius is known for being a spiritual warrior, fighting for what is right and just in the world. They are wise and intellectual, known for being empiricists who value principles over feelings and are unafraid of change. Sagittarians are lively, enthusiastic, optimistic, amusing, adaptable, and are known for their ability to look on the bright side of things. They value their independence and the ability to do what they want when they want. They are highly emotionally intelligent and easily connect with others. Known for their wanderlust, Sagittarius can be found traversing all corners of the world on thrill-seeking expeditions, chasing after geographical, intellectual, and spiritual adventures. They are on a perpetual quest for knowledge, which makes them incredible storytellers, entertainers, and creatives. Sagittarius can be brash and insensitive with their direct communication style.
