Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Capricorn between December 22nd and January 19th. Capricorn is one of the three Earth signs and in traditional astrology the ruling planet is Saturn. The exaltation (place of awareness) for Capricorn is in Mars, the fall (position of weakness) is in Jupiter, and detriment in the Moon. The constellation Capricornus has been consistently represented as a hybrid of a goat and a fish since the Middle Bronze Age, when the Babylonians used the “goat-fish” as a symbol of their god Ea. In Greek mythology, the constellation sometimes identified as Amalthea, the goat-nymph that suckled and nurtured the infant Zeus after his mother, Rhea, saved him from being devoured by his father, Cronos. Amalthea’s broken horn was transformed into the cornucopia or “horn of plenty”. Capricornus is also sometimes identified as Pan, the god with half a human body and a goat’s horns and legs (ruler of the forests and woodlands), who tried to save himself from the monster Typhon by turning himself into a fish and diving into a river. But Pan only partially succeeded, ending up with the head and body of a goat and tail of a fish. Zeus was amused by this and placed the image in the stars as the constellation Capricornus. Capricorns are ambitious, intelligent, serious, responsible, grounded, and practical. They have a desire for safety and security. Capricorns have a unique balance of confidence and humility, are loyal and dependable, value quality time, and take commitments seriously. They are ambitious, hard-working, over-achieving, driven by success and accomplishment, and are enterprising, setting lofty but attainable objectives, destined to go far in life. Capricorn enjoys tangible rewards and appreciates receiving gifts. It is important for them to feel respected and acknowledged. Capricorn takes love very seriously, is slow to commit to a relationship, and won’t end one without a solid reason. Capricorn is also compatible with the Water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Capricorn should avoid relationships with Fire and Air signs. Sagittarius, Aries, and Leo are too adventurous and high-energy for methodical and grounded Capricorn. To Capricorn, Gemini, Aquarius, and Libra can seem flighty and blindly inconsistent with their actions.
